In Small Steps to Success

February 2, 2011

New Years Resolutions often don’t work because we expect to change our life within weeks. Losing 20 or more pounds, ceasing smoking, getting off debts, eating and living more healthy… are not just short term goals but rather major life style changes.

You can approach these goals with an aggressive forceful energy or with a gentle, persistent energy. The choice is yours. Here are two scenarios that describe the different approaches.

An aggressive, forceful approach would be to go on a diet and force your body to lose 20 pounds fast. Using this kind of aggressive energy often leads to feelings of deprivation and resentment. It feels like a forceful interruption of your life that needs to be endured for a certain period of time. No wonder that at the end when we reach our goal and abruptly take the aggressive pressure off we go to the other extreme rewarding and indulging ourselves, which results in overeating and gaining weight back.

A gentle, persistent approach would be to see the weight loss as an improvement of your health and implement it with many small steps. When you focus on your health you take the stress out of food and the weight issue. You focus on your overall wellbeing. You can easily start with small steps such as going for a walk every day, drinking a glass of water, learning techniques to de-stress, dancing for 3 minutes to your favored song, getting more sleep… This approach makes it easy to feel good about yourself every day. It helps you to reinforce your desire to change and keeps you motivated.

Important is that you set measurable goals, break them down in many small steps and celebrate every step you reached.

Set yourself up for success! The time frame in which you reach your goal is less important. What counts is that you find a way that allows you to change your life permanently. This is not about how the rest of the world is achieving goals. It is about you being a unique human being and empowering yourself to create an approach that works for you.
